The national leadership of the Yoruba socio-cultural organoisation, the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has advised the federal government to repeal its plan to remove subsidies from petroleum products.
The organization in a statement made available to Sunday Tribune, and signed by its national coordinator,Otunba Gani Adams, noted that the planned removal would result in inflation.
“It is not ideologically right to know that Nigeria is the only OPEC member country selling fuel at N65 per litre, while other countries like Venezuela sell it at N9,Saudi Arabia sells it at N31.8, Kuwait,N34and Bahrain sells it to its citizens at N33.“
“Even war-torn Libya still sell fuel at an equivalent of N20.
He advised the federal government that “ it is not humane to remove succour in the name of boosting the economy.“
OPC also admonished the federal government that it would serve no purpose if Nigerians were allowed to agonize further on petroleum products prices as they have suffered seriously for long for the establishment, and protection of democracy in the country.
The organisation charged President Jonathan to take a cue from his predecessor, late Umar Musa Yaradua, who, rather than increase the prices of petroleum products, reduced it through subsidy.
It warned the federal government to forget the removal of subsidy on petroleum products and rather encourage private participation in the refining of fuel locally.“
