Benin Republic Outwits Nigeria To Clinch AU Chair

Against expectations that President Goodluck Jonathan will emerge chairman of the African Union (AU) the President of the Republic of Benin, Boni Yayi, has been elected the new chairman of the AU for a period of 12 months.
In his acceptance speech, Yayi however, promised support for Jonathan and Nigeria in tackling the terrorism problem which the country currently faces.
Yayi, whose emerge as AU helmsman was announced at the 18th ordinary session of the Assembly of the AU in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, yesterday added that he was prepared to consolidate on the good works being done by the AU particularly in the areas of integration and peace in the region.
Yayi was elected alongside Yoweri Museveni of Uganda as vice chairman of the AU, while the second vice chairman of the AU slated for North Africa was given to Moncef Marzouki of Tunisia.
Jacob Zuma of South Africa took the slot of third vice chairman of the union.
Meanwhile, the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU) yesterday  assured that they would give maximum support to the Nigerian government to bring an end to the gory activities of Boko Haram.
They jointly condemned, in strong terms, the increasing spate of terrorism by the Boko Haram sect in several parts of Nigeria.
Secretary-General of the UN Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, who spoke yesterday at the 18th ordinary session of the Assembly of the AU, said the world would not sit and fold its arms as Africa is engulfed.
