Officeholders Must Step Aside When Indicted - Christopher Kolade

In the bid to restore the lost moral values back to the society, public office holders must be made to vacate their positions when undergoing investigated for wrongdoing.
Former Nigerian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Dr. Christopher Kolade, who made this call in Abuja yesterday, also charged that office holders’ access to inflated remuneration and unearned benefits should be severely curtailed.
Kolade who presented a keynote address on “Restoration of Values For National Development” at the 44th Annual Conference of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) also stressed the need for custodians of value in the society to give leadership training to young people by encouraging them to take meaningful responsibility early in life to ensure the entrenchment of values back to the system.
According to him, the country needs to adopt a system that enables people to grow into leadership positions via experience and performance and also provide leadership education that highlights service delivery, quality and accountability and encourage the culture whereby leaders who show good example are openly celebrated.
He stressed that children must be taught the values that are features of our indigenous culture such as honour, justice, integrity, truthfulness, mutual respect among others.
He admonished the community to stick to their roles as character builders in the society by ensuring that leadership positions were only attained after suitable grooming and that respect and admiration should be conferred on individuals for their achievement, and not as a result of wealth.
Dr Kolade, who noted that restoration of values in the society was the responsibility of all and called on educational institutions to restore moral and civic aspects to formal education.
He said that leaders must promote a better understanding of the right relationship between reward and hard work; ensure that youths embrace the learning opportunities conferred by modern technology of communication.
