Areas that witnessed the influx of the “tourists” included Ogbe-ofu phase I & II infants Jesus, Ambrose Okeke (Behind Asaba Township Stadium) Isioma road Onyeobi way, Temple Clinic Road, and Otu-Ogwu.
Residents of Asaba on a daily basis throng to these areas to see the devastating effect caused by the ravaging flood.
LEADERSHIP investigation revealed that residential houses, shops and churches located at the heart of the flood have either collapsed or swept away.
A former councillor in Oshimili South Local Government Area, Mr. Afam Uzor, told LEADERSHIP that the areas had experienced influx of people coming to have a glimpse of the effects of the flood as a result of the river overflow.
He confirmed that no fewer than 200 persons visit the affected areas daily to sympathise with the residents or to see the level of the flood disaster.
Meanwhile, the state governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, yesterday confirmed that 100 communities were swept away by the over flowing River Niger and called for urgent assistance from the federal government.
Uduaghan who disclosed this while answering questions from journalists, explained that the situation on ground was sad and grim as over 100 coastal communities in at least 10 local government areas of the state have been submerged.
He said that the River Niger had over flown its banks covering an average distance of six kilometers in the affected communities, stressing that the tide was increasing by the day.
“Within a period of three days the number of communities affected increased astronomically and for now, there is fear of total flooding of the affected communities,” he added.
