FG Warns SURE-P Coordinators Against Corrupt Practices

The federal government, yesterday, warned the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme SURE-P committee to avoid corrupt practices that would hamper the success of the scheme Speaking when he inaugurated states implementation committees of community services , women and youth empowerment (CSWYE) under SURE-P, at the Presidential Villa, President Goodluck Jonathan who was represented by Vice President Namadi Sambo said government was committed to addressing poverty in the country and has continued to initiate programmes in this regard.
“Government will not condone any act of corruption in the implementation of the SURE-P programme.
What we are doing today is matching words with action,” he said, even as he commended Christopher Kolade for the leadership he has shown in the implementation process.
Sambo added that with the state committees now in place, government is in a better position to commence full implementation of programme to reach the grass root level, saying government is particularly worried that most youths are either underemployed or unemployed.
According to him, although youth unemployment has become a global phenomenon, the present administration was not ready to accept that development as normal.
The Vice President stressed the need for all sectors of the economy and tiers of government to fight the scourge of unemployment from all fronts by providing employment opportunities.
Earlier, Ambassador Christopher Kolade, chairman of the SURE-P initiative said the committee had been inaugurated to provide oversight of implementation and policy initiation as well as community supervision of programmes.
He noted that there is need for institutional framework for the implementation process to make it a huge success.
The implementation of the SURE-P programme government said will generate a total of 320,000 jobs every year.
