As politicians across the country begin subtle preparations for the next general election, a political pressure group, Njiko Igbo, has said that there is no going back on its quest to have a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction in 2015.
The acting National Publicity Secretary of the group and former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial aspirant in Imo State, Mr. Brady Nwosu, told Daily Sun in an interview in Lagos yesterday, that this was in line with the objective of Njiko Igbo to promote the place of the Igbo nation in the Nigeria project.
Nwosu said while the leaders of Njiko Igbo believe in the corporate existence of Nigeria, they also believed there should be equity in the country, especially as it concerns the presidency of Nigeria.
Nwosu stated that it was obvious that of the three major ethnic nationalities, it was only the South-east that had not had the opportunity to be president of the country since the country’s independence in 1960.
He said: “Each time there is an opportunity for an Igbo man to be president, something would happen. During the Second Republic, after Shehu Shagari won the second term, there was a move to position (former Vice President Alex) Ekwueme to become president, then there was a coup de tat
“Right now, our brothers from Ijaw have already attained the presidency and we have not and the Igbo nation is a major political bloc. There are only three political blocs
“Our group believes that an Igbo man must become president in 2015. An Igbo has never been opportuned to be president of this country. It is our turn to produce the president in 2015.”
Furthermore, Nwosu said since the inception of the present democratic dispensation, with the South-east contributed substantially to the emergence of presidents from other geopolitical zones, it is imperative for the other zones to reciprocate by supporting an Igbo man to be Nigeria’s president in 2015.
The former governorship aspirant said Igbo sons and daughters urging President Goodluck Jonathan to contest in the 2015 presidential election were merely expressing their personal opinion, which would not stop the quest of the generality of Ndigbo to have one of their own succeed the incumbent president in 2015.
Nwosu said to actualise the Igbo presidency project in 2015, Njiko Igbo had already started reaching out to Igbo leaders across the country.
Beside, he stated that the group was also consulting with political leaders in all the other geopolitical zones in the country.
He noted that “we are doing our consultation and the consultation is going on very well.”
However, he pointed out that the group was not affiliated to any other existing political party neither was it championing the interest of any individual.
