Gunmen kill ex-comptroller-general of prisons, security guard in Bauchi

Former comptroller-general of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS), Alhaji Ibrahim Jarma is dead. Jarma died yesterday afternoon at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi while receiving treatment as a result of injuries he sustained from gunshots by gunmen on Monday night.
The former prisons’ boss was shot near his house in Azare, headquarters of Katagum Local Government Area of the state by unknown gunmen as he was coming out of the mosque after observing Ishai prayer. The gunmen also killed one of his security guards, a prison warder and injured another when they opened fire on the security guards in Azare.
Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the ATBUTH, Dr. Mohammed Alkali, confirmed Jarma’s death in a telephone interview with journalists yesterday. Alkali said the former comptroller-general of prisons was transferred to ATBUTH from Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Azare on Monday night but died while receiving treatment yesterday afternoon.
A close friend to late Jarma, former deputy governor of Bauchi State, Alhaji Garba Muhammad Gadi, said the family would take his corpse from Bauchi to Azare for burial in the evening and described the late Jarma as an honest, humble, simple person who accommodated and assisted all without discrimination. Jarma who retired from the service as comptroller-general of prisons in 2002 contested the governorship election in 2003 on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) against the former governor,
Adamu Mu’azu. Holder of the traditional title of the Jarman Katagum, the former prisons boss was educated at the famous Barewa College, Zaria, Kaduna State.
