FG set to review penalties for national flag abuse

The Director-General of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr Mike Omeri, has revealed readiness of the Federal Government to review the section of the constitution stating the penalty for offenders or abusers of the national flag.

Mr Omeri made this known on Wednesday, at a press briefing on the maiden Nigerian National Symbol’s Day at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

Mr Omeri frowned on recent attitudes of Nigerians toward the national flag. He said that the initial punishment for abusers was N100. He explained that it was converted from the former 58 pounds before naira lost its value.

He then said that the Federal Government would review that section of the constitution.

Mr Omeri further explained that the national flag was not supposed to have coat of arm or any other logo on it. He described it as an offence, stressing that, such a flag should be kept indoors.

Regarding states which have their own flags, Omeri said that there was a law restricting states from having their own flags. He explained that the federal flag was above all flags. He equally added that, if the states were to fly their flags, the national flag should be higher.

He the said it was due to this that President Goodluck Jonathan recently directed the NOA to take urgent measures to standardise and popularise the correct shape and colours of the national flag.

The DG then said that Agency has proposed the annual recognition and observation of the National Flag on September 16, being the date the flag and Coat of Arms Ordinance came into existence.
