Former Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta has exonerated the Nigeria Police from the raging multi-billion naira scam rocking police pension, saying “the police have never been in control of police pension fund.”

He said the police has no hands in the shoddy and underground business perpetrated by some unscrupulous officials of the police board and urged the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency, prosecute all those indicted in what he described as “ monumental thefts”.

The former Inspector-General of police who was at the Force Headquarters along with eight former IGP who was paid a solidarity visit to the acting Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, on how to tackle the current security situation confronting the country, used the opportunity to clear the air about the alleged involvement of the police in the scam fraud rocking police pensions fund.

At a press briefing after the meeting, an angry  Gambo , while reacting to a question after seeking permission from the acting Inspector-General of Police, told newsmen that the fraud in the police pensions actually started when government transferred police pensions to the office of the Head Of Service, about twelve years ago.

Before then, the former number one police officer maintained that police pensions was very organized and devoid of all manner of fraud when it was being managed by police authorities, insisting that these sad developments actually started immediately the office was transfered to the Head Of Service and called on the media to join hands in fighting the menace.

Answering reporters question, Gambo Jimeta said “I want to clear the air about this pension issue that during our time, there was no theft that was going on in that pension.  “The issue here had always been who is in charge of police fund? Is it the police command or the police affairs department. In this case, it is very clear that police has never been in control of their funds. We in the past did it in such a way that the pension at that time was centrally organized and we received our pensions as at when due”.’

“It is during the last I think thirteen, fourteen years that this phenomenon has happened. It is a monumental theft and the media should partner with government to unravel those who are behind this. No more, no less. I had to ask for the IG’s permission to speak on this in case anyone of you go away with the idea that these fraud has been happening during our time. It never did during our time and that is fifteen, twenty years ago when the police were running their own pensions scheme.

“It happened when the thing was transferred to the civil service, that is the office of the Head of service of the federation. Thank you very much”. The former Inspector General of police, maintained.
