Nigeria Loses N100bn To Medical Tourism Annually — Indian Expert

The Chairperson, Primus International Super Specialty Hospital, Karu, Abuja, Mrs Achia Dewan, has disclosed that Nigeria loses over N100 billion annually to medical tourism.
She gave this figure, yesterday, in Abuja when she led a team from the hospital on a courtesy visit to the headquarters of the LEADERSHIP Newspapers Group, Abuja.  Mrs  Dewan expressed regret that many Nigerians seeking medical remedies would rather travel out of the country to avail themselves of foreign expertise and care.
The chairperson, however, noted that the rate of medical tourism was reducing as some of these Nigerians who used to travel out of the country, now patronise the hospital which has already gulped over N3.2 billion in investment.
Dewan lamented that the hospital has been a victim of campaigns of calumny by persons who did not know much about the hospital and maintained that the hospital has neither compromised its stand on ethics nor deviated from its mission.
According to her, the hospital provides tertiary medical services not only to the people of Nigeria, but to surrounding African countries as well.
She said that the organisation is being run to conform to international best practices by responsive, caring and efficient people focused on service and excellence.
Responding,  Editor of LEADERSHIP Newspaper, Suleiman Uba Gaya, commended the management of the hospital for the wonderful work it is doing, and said that it has helped to curb medical tourism and boost the country’s health sector.
He pledged the assistance of the newspaper in efforts to see that Nigerians got value for their money in terms of health care.
