Mark, Tambuwal, Uzodinma, Others Condole With Families

In the wake of the DANA Air crash that left no fewer than 153 people dead after it plunged into a residential area in Nigeria’s economic capital, Lagos on Sunday, prominent Nigerians have continued to express shock and regret over the incident.
President of the Senate, Senator David Mark yesterday lamented the double plane crash which involved the Nigeria Cargo plane and DANA Airline in Accra, Ghana and Lagos, Nigeria respectively.
Mark who sympathised with victims of the separate crashes assured of the senate’s resolve to investigate and get to the root of the unfortunate incident.
Senator Mark who described the incident as very unfortunate and disheartening, posited: “I feel so sad and heartbroken hearing the news of this ugly incident. It is quite unfortunate and disheartening. We mourn the loss of lives and pray God to put a stop to every form of evil in our land.
“The Senate will definitely investigate the cause of this ugly incident to checkmate any future occurrence,” Senator Mark assured.
The Senate President who also sympathised with the families of the victims of the crashes, and prayed God to grant them eternal rest, however, charged airline operators across the country to be more alive to their responsibilities and making safety a priority.
On his part, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, yesterday said he received with great shock and sadness, the news of the crash of the Dana Airline in Lagos.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Malam Imam Imam, Tambuwal condoled with the families of the victims and prayed to the Almighty God to grant them eternal rest.
Tambuwal who described the crash as “unfortunate and a national tragedy” said, the incident came at a time Nigeria made giant strides in the area of aviation safety.
According to him, “this is a one of the incidents that should not deter Nigerians from traveling by air.”
The senate committee chairman on Aviation, Senator Hope Uzodinma yesterday, described the crash as shocking, just as he called for an intensive investigation of the incident to ascertain the remote cause.
The senator, who lamented that the crash was occurring at a time when the federal government had put in place the necessary machinery to revamp the aviation industry, called for an immediate probe into the air accident by the necessary authorities in the aviation ministry. This he said must be done with a view to unearth the cause and avert future occurrence.
Commiserating with families of the victims, Senator Uzodinma assured that his committee was bent on putting in place laws that would guarantee the safety of air travellers in the country.
Reacting too, the deputy president of the senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu like others also expressed shock over the crash which has thrown the nation into mourning, saying it was “most unfortunate, shocking and emotionally devastating”.
“This is shocking beyond words, especially given the noticeable efforts at repositioning the nation’s aviation industry and when we thought we had put the air disasters of early 2000s behind us.
“We must therefore work together as a nation to get to the root of the mishap, strengthen air safety, and arrest any form of relapse in this critical sector,” he added.
He sent his heartfelt condolences to those who lost their loved ones and called on Nigerians to remain calm and pray for the peaceful repose of the souls of the dead.
The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), has also condoled with the families of victims of Sunday’s air crash, which incidentally occurred in his state.
Governor Fashola, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Hakeem Bello, expressed shock at the incident which, reportedly, occurred as the aircraft approached the vicinity of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja.
Fashola expressed deep sorrow that the expectations of the families to welcome their loved ones at the end of the journey was cut short in such an abrupt and unexpected manner, adding that the experience could be traumatic.
“It is unfortunate that your expectations to welcome and embrace your loved ones after their journey could be cut short so abruptly and in such unexpected manner. There is no gainsaying the experience could be traumatic”, Governor Fashola said, while regretting that the incident would destabilise homes, as well as cause disruption to the lives of the affected families.
The governor, in a statement by his media aide, Mr. Hakeem Bello also condoled with residents of the crash site in Iju-Ishaga whose houses and properties were either damaged or destroyed as the plane crashed.
He meanwhile condemned the idea of sending “heartbreaking” text messages while he called on the residents of the affected area to keep away from the crash site both for their own safety and in order to allow emergency workers effectively carry out their work.
The governor warned that the environment of the crash site bears large concentration of carbon monoxide which is dangerous to human health.
While urging Nigerians to be calm as details of the crash were yet to be made public, Fasholas, however, prayed for the repose of the souls of the 153 victims and that the Almighty God would grant the families the fortitude to bear their irreparable loss.
