AS the July 14 governorship election draws near in Edo State, the new Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone 5, Benin City, Mr Hashimu Argungu, has vowed to decisively deal with any politician found fomenting trouble in the state.
Argungu, who spoke with journalists on Thursday in Benin City, admitted that there was tension in the state because of the forthcoming election, but charged politicians to play according to the rules or be dealt.
The AIG’s warning came on a day some youths in the state stormed the Oredo Local Government Area secretariat and attempted to take over the council following an Ekpoma High Court judgment which declared the current transition committees
running local government areas in the state illegal.
Some of the youth had earlier, on Wednesday, stormed some local government secretariats in Edo Central senatorial district in a bid to force the transition committees running the councils out of office on the heels of the court’s declaration that they were illegal.
Mr Argungu assured of his readiness to ensure that free and fair election was conducted in the state.
Besides, he said he would set up a special force that would check the excesses of kidnappers and other criminals in the state.
