Why Police Officers Are Corrupt — IGP

Acting inspector-general of police (IG) Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar has said that the fear of officers not owning a house of their own has driven many into corruption. Many officers and men retire from the force without a roof over their head, he stated.
Abubakar spoke yesterday during the inauguration ceremony of the board of directors of the Police Savings and Loans Limited (Mortgage Bankers), noting that there was need to empower the officers and make life comfortable for them as obtained in most parts of the world.
“The worst are those who died in active service as their families are generally ejected from either rented or official abodes before the end of their mourning period. The effect of this has encouraged corruption, immorality among officers and men of the force and has even accelerated the death rate of retired personnel,” said the acting IG.
While thanking God for having the police mortgage institution, the police boss said it will address the enormous housing and other related problems of the force.
The acting IG identified these problems as: house ownership, barrack development, financing credit and loans, thrift maturity and liquidation, structured, and disciplined access to funds, amongst others.
Abubakar charged the newly inaugurated directors to articulate and implement the vision and mission goals and objectives of the bank for the interest and general well-being of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force.
In his address, the chairman, board of directors of the mortgage institution, Mr. Agboola Oshodi-Glover,  a commissioner of police, promised to abide by the collective duties, obligations, roles and responsibilities of the institution.
