As the remains of the slain Private Secretary to Edo State Governor, Adam Oshiomhole Mr. Olaitan Oyerinde, is laid to rest Thursday, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the People Democratic Party (PDP) Wednesday allegedly accused Oshiomhole, of blackmail to score cheap political points in the murder of his aide.
The accusation however came on a day Osun State Government said Oyerinde would be accorded a state burial.
Also, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State Council called on the police and other security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous act on Oyerinde, who it claimed was its Deputy General Secretary.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, in a statement Wednesday, said the NWC was particularly appalled with the dangerous decent to violence and the resort to baseless accusations and foul language employed to score cheap political points.
He said the PDP condemns all forms of violence and can never be involved in murder to achieve its political goals, adding:
“Our pedigree as a performing political party places us in good stead to succeed in any electoral contest in Nigeria. We therefore do not need to kill in order to succeed.
“We call on the Nigerian public to note that these accidents and murders in Edo State suddenly emerged upon the political gains of the PDP in Edo State thriving on the scandals of Governor Oshiomhole’s private mansion and other nauseating corrupt practices,” he said.
A statement signed by the Director, Bureau of Communications and Strategy, Office of the Governor, of Osun State, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, said that the Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola-led administration, in recognition of the contributions of Oyerinde to the development and progress of humanity, had concluded arrangements to accord him a state burial befitting of a hero.
However, NLC in a statement jointly issued by the Chairman, Idowu Adelakun, and Acting Secretary, John Odigie, stated that it viewed the assassination of Oyerinde, as an affront on the collective rights to life and a collapse of the rule of law in the state. The council also expressed concern over the incessant attempts on the life of Oshiomole and his aides and called on the state security apparatus to rise up to their constitutional task of securing life and property.
“We are therefore using this medium to call on the Inspector General of Police, all security agencies and institutions as well as well meaning Nigerians to join hand in fishing out his murderers and perpetrators of this very heinous crime. We wish to state our resolve to stand by the side of justice in this matter and resist by every which means possible any attempt to sweep this ‘murder’ under the carpet as has been the case in time past.
“We are therefore using this medium to call on the Inspector General of Police, all security agencies and institutions as well as well meaning Nigerians to join hand in fishing out his murderers and perpetrators of this very heinous crime.
