Former Nigerian Representative to the United Nations and elderstatesman, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule yesterday stated that the North is for both Christians and Muslims.
He therefore challenged northern leaders to go back to the drawing board to redefine its existence.
The Elder statesman stated this at a northern impact summit organised by the Arewa Transformation and Empowerment Initiative in Kaduna.
According to him, “the north is for Christians and Muslims, the north of Muslim Sadauna, the north of Christian Sarkin Kagoror, the north of Berom, the north of Yoruba, the north of Kanuris, the north of Fulanis and the north of everybody.”
He noted that, “there must be respect, there must be accommodation, respect for one another, there must be above all justice from the leaders, justice brings peace, justice is what brings about development, justice is what we need, because behind every crises is injustice.
“Justice is what we need, not only in the north, but in the whole of Nigeria. Power can remain in hand of an infidel if he is going to be fair and just, but should not remain in the hand of a believer if there would be no justice. Justice is what we need everywhere,” Alhaji Maitama Sule noted.
“The world cannot be governed by force, never by fear, even not by power. What governs in the end is the concept of justice and fair play. And that was what the Sarduana did to unite the north; to keep the different people of the north together.
“He was able to establish one north and nobody addressed us as Hausa or Fulani or Yoruba or Nupe or Tiv, we were all called yan Arewa,” he concluded.
