Bombings: Security tightened at UNIABUJA

Security has been tightened at the University of Abuja following Sunday’s bomb blast at the Bayero University, Kano, which claimed the lives of two Professors and at least 13 others.

Our correspondent learnt on Wednesday that security was particularly tightened at the permanent site of the university, with riot policemen and soldiers around the main gate of the institution.

Staff, students and visitors were compelled to identify themselves and subjected to thorough screening before being allowed into the complex.

Those who could not produce their identity cards were allowed in when they presented cash receipts of payments made or their letters of admission and were identified by fellow students.

One of the students, who identified himself as Yusuf Ibrahim, told our correspondent that the development was as a result of the security situation in the country.

He said, “We cannot help but agree with those who introduced these measures because of what happened in Kano.

“Most people seem to forget that the University of Maiduguri had earlier been threatened long before BUK was hit.

“The new security measures introduced here have given us a measure of confidence to attend lectures. Remember, we just resumed.”

Also, engineering students held a peaceful demonstration to protest the non-accreditation of their course on Wednesday.

The students in their dozens first protested at the university’s permanent site before retiring to the mini-campus at Gwawalada to express their displeasure.
