It was a sad day for the entire members of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the entire people of Edo State over a road accident involving Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s convoy and a tipper truck at Afuze-Auchi road in Edo North senatorial district of the State.

While Oshiomole escaped the fatal accident by the whiskers, three journalists and a driver were not that lucky, as they lost their lives in the accident. The journalists are Messrs Olatunji Jacob and George Okosun, both of the Independent Television (ITV), Benin, and AIT cameraman, Fidelis Ohani. The affected driver, who was simply identified as Samson, later died in hospital.

Oshiomhole had gone to receive decampees from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the ACN at a ceremony in Afuze, headquarters of Owan East Local Government of the state, when the accident occurred on their way to Auchi en route Benin.

Reports had it that the tipper lorry rammed into the SUV Jeep directly behind the Governor’s vehicle, and the Press Crew bus Hilux in turn collided with the jeep. The two ITV reporters, George Okosun and Olatunji Jacob, allegedly died on the spot, while the AIT cameraman, Fidelis Ohani, and the bus driver simply identified as Samson, later died at Irrua Specialist Hospital, Irrua. Other journalists involved in the accident were Rosemary Obayuwana of Bronze FM, David Acha, a photo-journalist with Observer newspapers, Eubadus Enahoro, Assistant Editor, Observer Newspapers, Paul Ezewan of the DBN, Nosa Omoregbe, a cameraman in Government House, Mike Aghioma, PRO Government House, and Eddy Aimakhu, also of the Ministry of Information.

The security men and others, who were said to be in critical condition due to injuries sustained, were also rushed to the hospital. According to account of the accident, the driver of the tipper truck attempted to escape but was quickly apprehended by sympathizers.

Director, media and publicity of the Campaign Organisation, Prince Kassim Afegbua, said the governor had ordered full investigation to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of this unfortunate incident.

His words, “We have every reason to suspect foul play in this incident and we expect the police to unravel the circumstances that led to this avoidable but unfortunate incident. Our suspicion is further buoyed by the fact that there had been series of threats and boastful statements from the opposition camp, expressing very crude desperation about the July 14, 2012, gubernatorial election in the state as a do or die affair.
