Killed Delta politician’s family denies rejecting autopsy report

Family of the late Delta State governorship candidate, Chief Ogbe Onokpite, on Monday, denied rejecting the report of his autopsy.
Onokpite was allegedly shot dead by the Police in his Beeland Hotel Room, in Udu, Warri, in November last year. However, his family members and associates claimed the killing was politically-motivated.
The medical examination to determine the cause of death of the politician was ordered by a Warri Court, following a disagreement between the police and his family on the number of times and areas Onokpite was shot.
Reports last week claimed that the family had rejected the autopsy result because some sections of the report were “suspect”.
In an interview with our correspondent in Warri, lawyer for the Onokpite family, Mr John Odohisi, denied that the autopsy report was rejected.
He added that he was the only lawyer for the family mandated to speak on the issue, saying the Onokpites had accepted the report and was meeting to know the next step of action.
Odohisi said, “The family has no problems with the report. We have accepted the autopsy conducted by the team of medical pathologists.
“We have no problems with the doctors that did the report or the autopsy itself. It is not true that we rejected the medical report.”
The death of the Citizens Popular Party’s candidate for the Delta governorship election created tension when his associates alleged that his death was politically-motivated, as against the position of the police that the deceased was a gunrunner.
The police also alleged that the Urhobo chief was resisting arrest when he was shot.
However, it was learnt that the police authorities had set up a panel on the orders of the Police Service Commission to investigate the policemen involved in the killing.
