Lagos State Commissioner for Establishment, Pensions and Training, Mrs Florence Oguntuase, said on Thursday that the Federal Government owed pensioners in the state N11.2bn.
Addressing a ministerial news briefing in Ikeja, the commissioner said the amount represented seven years accumulated pension benefits of state government pensioners, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
According to the commissioner, N1.1bn and N10.1bn had been verified and approved for reimbursement to pensioners in the state and its local governments, respectively.
Oguntuase said, “These figures are cumulative from 2005 and have been verified and they are with them in Abuja but we don’t know when they would pay.
“The committee assured us that as soon as their findings are concluded, they would ensure that no pensioner is owned anything, so Lagos pensioners are eagerly looking forward to when they will be paid.”
She expressed optimism that the outcome of the ongoing investigation on pension fund administration would be favourable to state and local governments.
Oguntuase said the State Civil Service Pensions Office paid N119, 701,677 to 145 pensioners as gratuities in the past one year.
She added that another N1.7bn was paid as pension to 9,000 pensioners in the state while about N10m was spent on the quarterly distribution of food items to pensioners above the age of 70 in the past one year.
