An explosion on Sunday rocked an area near a theater used by Christian students for worship at the Bayero University Kano. The explosion went off while the catholic mass was going on.
Abubakar Jibril, a spokesman for Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency, said at least three explosions had struck an old section of Bayero University’s campus in the city of Kano and its surrounding area. He said sporadic gunfire was still ongoing.
Jibril said rescue officials could not reach the site as an apparent terrorist attack was still underway.
"There was a huge explosion at the open-air theater close to the entrance of the old site of the university during a church service by Christian students," another security source said. Residents also reported hearing gunfire.
LEADERSHIP gathered that members of the Joint Task Force had moved in to repel the attack but were engaged by the assailants in a shootout. The two sides are still engaged in gunfight, according to a source.
It was not immediately clear if there were casualties.
Islamist group Boko Haram claimed Jan. 20 attacks in Kano, the largest city in Nigeria's mainly-Muslim north, when coordinated bombings and shootings left at least 185 dead, the extremists' deadliest attack yet.
On Thursday, bomb attacks at newspaper offices in the capital, Abuja, and the northern city of Kaduna left at least nine people dead.
