Mallam Nasiru el-Rufai
By Onyebuchi Ezigbo
The Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) has said it was not true that the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Nasiru el-Rufai, has been chosen as its flag-bearer in the 2015 presidential elections.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, the party said the issue of who becomes its presidential candidate had not been decided.

El-Rufai recently took up the role in CPC as the Chairman of the Renewal Committee which was charged with the responsibility of re-organising the party structures, thus fueling speculations that he is being groomed to take over from the former Head of State, Major-General Muhammad Buhari (rtd) as the party presidential candidate.
However, Fashaikin said the party was still working on a possible merger with other parties and that at the appropriate time, it would employ transparent process in choosing the party's presidential candidate.
“We wish to make it abundantly clear that the party leadership has not made any decision on its preferred candidacy for the 2015 elections. It is vitally important to use this forum to disabuse the minds of our members and teeming supporters from the noxious effect of that publication," he said.
Fashakin said the party’s attention had been drawn to the widely circulated rumour of the endorsement of el-Rufai as its candidate ahead of the 2015 general elections but said no such decision had been made.
He further said that as a Political Party with deeply entrenched democratic values, it feels its preferred candidate will emerge from transparent electoral process and not from selection by anointment.

“For the umpteenth time, we restate our avowed commitment to our charted course and no amount of sponsored innuendos and deliberate mendacity can derail our set objectives. We are aware that the piece of misinformation had its roots in PDP, with its large array of paid agents and proxies to castigate notable CPC members ahead of 2015 elections. It is quite asinine to insinuate that a Party, in possible merger talks with other coalition Partners, will have a candidate already anointed for the Presidential Elections,” he added.
