Budget: Police to spend N212m on dogs, horses


The Nigeria Police Force has earmarked the over N212 million for the purchase and maintenance of dogs and horses in 2012.
This is contained in 2012 budget details submitted to the National Assembly last week by President Goodluck Jonathan. In the proposal, the police will spend over N212 million on dogs and horses while the sum N431, 253,686 was set aside for the procurement of arms and ammunition.

The sum of N87, 707,188 will be used in the construction of the Force Headquarters dog section, barracks, offices and kennels in Abuja. The money will also cater for furnishing and infrastructure including perimeter fencing. The sum of N18, 038,123 will be spent on the maintenance of horses in the police commands while N20, 420,517 was put to one side for the maintenance of dogs.
The police force also proposed to buy more dogs for operations in the next fiscal year and assigned the sum of N44, 753,973 for the procurement of specialized dogs including sniffer dogs. The feeding cost was included.  The sum of N42, 624,51will be used for the purchase of police patrol horses and accessories. The dogs and horses will be used by the policemen in all the police commands and zones.
The Police also proposed the establishment and development of police veterinary dogs breeding centre at N21.6 million and veterinary diagnostic laboratory/ radiology in Abuja at N16.006 million.
The police will spend N71, 896,863,514 on allowances and social contributions as well as N44, 544,722,278 on non regular allowances.
The police will use the sum of N2,748,609,517 on the purchase of security equipments, N203,211,329 on motor vehicles  N52,297,012 on motorcycles, N309,633,225  on vans and N595,905,042  on the procurement of trucks. N65,890,200 was allocated for the maintenance of office furniture, N285,887,233  for maintenance of office building and residential quarters, N77,399,935 for office and IT equipments and N40,841,033  for the maintenance of plants and generators.
