Niger State Governorship Election Tribunal on Thursday upheld the victory of Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu in the April 26 governorship election in the state.
Aliyu was the Peoples Democratic Party's candidate in the election.
Dismissing the petition of the Congress of Progressive Change (CPC) and its state standard bearer, Alhaji Ibrahim Bako Shettima in Minna, the tribunal Chairman, Justice Pascal Nnadi ruled that the petitioners failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt as required by the law all the allegations raised in their petition.
The tribunal maintained that the petitioners failed to prove and give credible evidences to buttress the allegation of corrupt practices and bribery during the course of the election.
According to the tribunal, the evidence presented was classified as hearsay, stressing that hearsay was not admissible in law.
In his judgment which lasted more than three hours, the tribunal also ruled that though it was evident that there were incidences of irregularities during the election in 19 local government areas of the state as alleged in the petition, the degree of such irregularities cannot affect the valid lawful votes of the electorates.
