Chairman of the ad hoc committee investigating the fuel subsidy regime of the federal government, Hon Farouk Lawan will know his fate on Tuesday when the House of Representatives resume plenary. This was even as the House stated its position on the $600,000 bribery allegation against Lawan and insisted that he was on his own as he faces full investigation by relevant security agencies.
The spokesman of the House, Hon Zakari Mohammed, made this known in a telephone interview with Leadership, yesterday, while reacting to recent claims by the embattled lawmaker that the leadership of the House was aware of the bribe collected by him from Femi Otedola to exonerate his companies from indictment in the subsidy probe report.
Zakari, who is the chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, emphasised that the position of the lawmakers had not changed, and that they would decide the fate of Lawan in the committee of the whole House when they resume plenary on Tuesday next week.
“We stand by the position we took on the matter on Saturday. We haven’t made any changes till we meet on Tuesday to deliberate on the matter in the committee of the whole House. As it stands, our press statement on Saturday is still our position”, he stated.
In a related development, Otedola yesterday visited the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) of the Nigeria Police in Abuja.
Though details of his visit were sketchy as at press time, Otedola was said to have arrived at the SFU at about 12.55pm and allegedly narrated what transpire between him and Farouk Lawan.
Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), said yesterday, that it was yet to see the video evidence of the Chairman of Zenon Petroleum, Mr.Femi Otedola, which he claimed as proof that he offered Farouk Lawan bribe at his Abuja residence.
An impeccable source at the EFCC who did not wish to be named, told LEADERSHIP that the commission only learnt from a newspaper report that operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) had forwarded the said video to the EFCC for prosecution.
The source added that the agency would take necessary action against the concerned parties after receiving the video evidence.
